Basil Oil – not just a Winter oil!
With winter upon us (at least here in the southern hemisphere) I recently pulled out my Basil Oil to help get me through the colder months. Basil Oil is great for fighting off colds and the flu as it is a great boost to our immune system.
Because I love it so much I wanted to share it with you all. However when doing research I discovered there is so much more to Basil Oil than meets the eye! I knew it was good for me, but just how good was a surprise.
For those of you who are new to essential oils, Basil Oil is simply an oil derived from distilling the basil plant – leaves, flowers and sometimes stems. You can then use this oil for many purposes, as I have discovered!
Basil Oil can be vaporised in your home, consumed or used on your skin
The reason I use Basil Oil over the winter is for the effect that it has on my respiratory system. The strong smell, when used in a compress on your chest or vaporised at home, breaks up any congestion in my lungs and sinuses.
I also use it as a precaution. I mix a drop of essential Basil Oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub it particularly on my chest and neck after a shower – any excess goes on the rest of my body.
Some studies even suggest that the anti spasmodic properties of Basil Oil help with aliments like whooping cough.
For those who suffer from asthma, allergies or bronchitis, Basil Oil is great for you all year around.
When Spring comes around I usually put my Basil Oil away, but after this year I won’t be. Why? There are so many reasons!
On your skin
Looking for a good antiseptic and antibacterial? Basil Oil is it! Apply a few drops of oil onto a wound or use it with a carrier oil on a compress and it will help fight skin infections. A compress can also help to relieve muscle aches and pains and even arthritis.
A little trick is to use Basil Oil on mosquito or insect bites. As well as taking the stinging away and relieving the itching feeling, it will help ensure the bite doesn’t get infected.
Helping my digestive system
Basil Oil can also aid digestion and help with digestive problems such as flatulence, cramps and constipation. It can also help with nausea from motion sickness, so is a great herb to take with you when you travel.
It can also be a great antibacterial for fighting any internal infections, especially in regards to the bladder.
Relieving stress or anxiety
Burning or vaporising Basil Oil can help to reduce the effects of anxiety and stress. The scent given off is uplifting for the spirit and can help to clear a foggy mind. It can also help with lethargy for those who need a little pick me up. Plus, it smells great!
