Colouring gets me in touch with my inner child

Guess what I was given for Christmas – a mandala colouring book! This couldn’t be more perfect for me, for 2 reasons:

1) I have been doing art classes and am loving creating art and

2) it is extremely beneficial.

I am a big fan of adult colouring in. Let me explain.

Colouring allows you to connect with your inner child

There is something so joyful about getting in touch with your inner child and simply playing. When I colour in I feel like am forgetting about the rest of the world and just doing something fun. Your inner child loves this!

Far too often we get caught up with life and what we ‘should’ (I don’t like the word ‘should’) be doing and don’t let our inner child play. However, if we make time for play not only will you enjoy this time, but you will see the benefits in other parts of your life and you will begin to look at life with joy again.

Colouring is mindful

When I am colouring, I am focused 100% on what I am doing, very much similar to meditation. My mind is concentrating on only one thing and allows me to focus on the moment.

Some studies even suggest that tasks with a predictable result – knitting, colouring etc. – can be very calming and are good for reducing stress. It is also a wonderful sensation to physically hold the pencils in your hand and to feel it move across the paper.

It sparks your creativity

By picking up your pencils you can create whatever you like. YOU get to decide what your mandala (or other colouring piece) will become. The colours, patterns and feeling that you get by colouring, will inspire your brain.

There are no rules and better yet, there are no consequences, a rare thing in the world today.

Colouring can help you sleep

Too often I hear people telling me that they can’t sleep, yet when I ask what they do before bed they are watching TV or playing/reading on their smart phone. This isn’t good! The blue light emitted from these devices disrupts your circadian rhythm, or the rhythm of our body. These bodily rhythms are ‘inbuilt’ in us but can be disrupted by outside influences.

Colouring is a simple (and fun!) way to relax and keep in balance with your circadian rhythm.

Why mandalas?

Mandalas are sacred circles with universal significance, so for me they are even better than colouring in a general picture. A mandala has no beginning or end and one central point. This central point represents infinite possibilities and the belief that anything is possible.

Do you colour in? I’d love to hear why and the benefits you receive.
