Is your toilet paper making you itch?

Is ‘down below’ irritated and inflamed?

Do you get sore, red, angry looking genitals?

Do you think ‘Oh no, I have herpes!’ but when investigated, it isn’t so?

Do you have a mystery condition that no one seems to be able to diagnose or treat?

You might fear vaginal thrush, for which pantyhose and antibiotics are prime suspects. Yet frustratingly your pathology results come back negative.

You’ve been to doctors, naturopaths and healers and still don’t have an answer…or a solution! You’ve tried vinegar douches (they relieved it for a bit, but then it came right back) and creams and potions, all to no avail.

Symptoms that occur ‘downstairs’ can often go undiagnosed due to embarrassment and ignorance. We don’t like to talk about these things and we ‘just hope they will go away’.

Ladies, there may be a simple solution that you haven’t even considered.

Case Study

Awhile back I was suffering with this condition. When it got out of control I would take a thrush pill, which would only temporarily relieve the symptoms before they came back with a vengeance. I was eating right, looking after myself and doing vinegar douches but nothing was helping!

During this time I went to India for 5 weeks and had freedom from the discomfort down below. It was heaven! When I returned home, the problem started again.

I went on holidays for a week. The problem disappeared.

I decided to investigate the only thing I could think of that was different when I was away from home.

THE TOILET PAPER!

I discovered that toilet paper is treated with formaldehyde – a substance that is known to be a human carcinogen. Unsurprisingly there is a link between formaldehyde and genital irritation and urinary tract infections (UTI).

It turns out that formaldehyde is used to improve the ‘wet strength’ of toilet paper. And stronger toilet paper sells better! Some toilet papers are also bleached with chlorine, which can also cause severe irritation. Chlorine is used to make the toilet paper as white as possible. It seems the softer and whiter your toilet paper is, the more toxic it is for your body.

Since discovering this I’ve only slipped up a couple of times – once using bamboo toilet paper (ouch!) and once using toilet paper in a hotel. The reaction was immediate.

Safe Toilet Paper Options

If like me, you suffer ‘down below’, here a few safer toilet paper options for you to consider:

  • Unbleached – completely natural and bleach free
  • Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) – made from recycled paper that is chlorine free (ie. bleached without chlorine – using oxygen, ozone or hydrogen peroxide)
  • Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) – Non-recycled paper bleached with oxygen, ozone, or hydrogen.

I think you’ll agree that when it comes to choice of toilet paper, this is one time when less is definitely more!
