Winter doesn’t mean you have to be cold!
With the arrival of winter I am rugging up and trying to stay warm. Sometimes, no matter how many layers of clothing I wear, if my feet are cold, my whole body is cold. Feet play such an important role in regulating our body temperature.
Have you ever found yourself awake in the morning with one foot sticking out of the blankets? Chances are that you got hot during the night and this was your body’s way of trying to cool down.
Feet (like hands) have a large surface area a lot of specialised blood vessels. When the body needs to release heat, these vessels open up, allowing large amount of blood to pass through and hence release heat. Conversely, these blood vessels restrict when you are cold and they are not in use.
This is also the case with your hands and head. When you want to get warm, putting on a beanie or hat will trap in the heat. Feet also have less muscle, so they cool down a lot faster than the rest of the body. They also have less hair, so the heat exchange can happen a lot faster.
Below are some sure fire ways to heat up your little tootsies this winter.
-
Warm up your socks first
Toasting your socks in front of a fire on (safely) on a heater will provide instant warmth to your feet. If you can’t do that, apply a heat pack to your feet.
-
Change your socks regularly
After wearing socks all day could mean that sweat gets trapped in your socks, cooling them down. Once you get home, put on a fresh pair.
-
Soak your feet
There is nothing more relaxing than soaking in a warm bath. If you can’t do that, take 5 minutes to soak your feet instead.
-
Massage your feet
Get the circulation going in your feet by massaging them gently, or going for a short walk. Get the blood flowing to increase the heat generation. If you have cold feet no matter what, get them checked out, as it could be a sign of illness. Do you get cold feet? How do you warm them up? Leave a comment below.
