Here is something to think about while seeking samadhi (the union with the divine) – meditation is simply a dance between seeking and avoiding. Anyone who chooses to meditate is seeking enlightenment, peace, calm or relaxation, and yet so many of us are avoiding the very thing that makes meditation easier – pain.
Sound strange? Well let me explain.

Let’s look at this diagram. We can think of the middle line as samadhi, what we seek during meditation – the ultimate or final stage where we connect with the divine. However, the more we seek samadhi, the more elusive it becomes.
The same, but opposite, can be said for pain – the more we seek to avoid it, the more we become aware of it. We sit in a meditation pose and become aware of every little ache and pain in our body. Our mind becomes overcrowded with thoughts and we do our best to avoid thinking about them, instead trying to focus on nothing. So while we are seeking samadhi, our minds and bodies are doing the very best they can to avoid the pain.
So how do we get closer to the middle line?
I would like to suggest that we seek out the source of our pain and examine it. What is it that is causing us this pain?
In the act of seeking the source of the pain or discomfort, which by the way I challenge you to find, we move away from AVOIDING towards SEEKING to understand where the pain is coming from. This takes us back across the samadhi line and gives us a glimpse of peace and builds on the “samadhi neural pathway”.
As time goes by, we drift back across the line, once again adding to the samadhi neural highway. This distance we cover zigzagging across the middle line becomes less and less. So in time it becomes a minor dance back and forth across the line and we find ourselves in flow more and more.
So, the key is to move towards that which we are avoiding and away from that which we are seeking. Do an experiment with this principle and let us know what happens for you.
